Finding freedom, healing and hope with Emotional Freedom Techniques

Many people discover EFT Tapping when they feel stuck, whether physically, emotionally, or spiritually. This true story of Anjali, one of my EFT clients, shows how tapping can help release fear, restore confidence, and open the door (literally!) to new possibilities, even later in life.

About Anjali

I had the privilege of working with Anjali, an elder friend I first met when she and her husband hosted a local metaphysical discussion group. They once invited me to speak at one of their gatherings and later shared wonderfully kind feedback about my presentation and demonstrations.

When we began our EFT sessions online, Anjali was in a great deal of pain and sleeping in a recliner because of spinal fractures. She confided that she was “scared to death of falling and not being able to get up.”

Once an active, social woman, she had become isolated. Climbing the stairs to shower was too difficult, so she had been taking sponge baths for over a month.

Releasing Fear and Making Space for Change

In our first EFT tapping session we focused on calming her nervous system
and clearing the emotional overwhelm that was keeping her stuck.

After a few rounds of tapping, Anjali felt lighter and more open to new ideas. I shared information about local programs that help seniors access mobility supports such as lifts for beds and stairs.

Then I gently suggested that moving to a single-level home might make life easier, but she felt strong resistance. Leaving her home of twenty years brought up grief and stress. So, we tapped on those feelings. I also mentioned services that specialize in helping seniors downsize and move with ease, knowledge of which gave her some hope.

By the end of the session, she said she felt “happier and more optimistic.”

A few days later when I checked in to see how she was doing she reported;

“In one week I have

shifted out of most of the fear

a remedy for the pain in my feet appeared

got up the stairs, showered

reduced my pain meds by half…

Ta Da: I’d say that’s pretty good.

Anjali

Tapping for Confidence and Feelings of Calm

A couple of weeks later, during our second session, Anjali shared that she had applied for funding for a stair lift and was even considering a move to a seniors’ residence.

She still felt anxious and overwhelmed, so we used tapping for stress relief and confidence building. Afterwards, she told me she felt a sense of “aliveness” she hadn’t experienced in a long time.

We also tapped on her fear of losing control over her body and mind. Tapping helped her feel more peaceful and even playful. She laughed and said she wanted to tell me how “brilliant” she was, listing her Wordle scores and sharp problem-solving skills as proof!

Healing Emotional Patterns from the Past

As we continued, memories surfaced about her childhood and her relationship with her mother, who Anjali described as a woman often driven by fear and over protectiveness. Her mother’s anxieties had shaped many of Anjali’s own fears about safety and self-expression.

So we tapped again and gently released some of the tension, sadness and limiting beliefs that originated during those childhood experiences.

Imagining a Better Future

Eventually, our conversations turned to practical next steps. We talked about the possibility of moving closer to her daughter, who lived three hours away and while supportive, was busy managing a life of her own.

I suggested to Anjali that moving into a community setting might ease her sense of isolation and loneliness by enhancing her social circle, while creating more physical safety and ease. We tapped through her resistance, money worries, and uncertainty about the future.

I referred her to a trusted and ethically minded, local financial planner and then invited her to imagine her ideal living situation.

After some gentle tapping, she envisioned:

Two bathrooms

A cozy sofa facing large windows with a view

Space for her art

Three healthy meals a day

Laundry and cleaning services

A sense of safety and peace, knowing that if she fell, help would be available

When she said it would be impossible to find a place like that, we tapped again to release the “impossible.” I suggested maybe they could find two adjoining suites, like hotel rooms connected by a door. That idea made her smile — and she ended the session feeling lighter and more hopeful.

Manifesting the Dream

A few days later, Anjali texted me with exciting news:

“We found a place near our daughter — two adjoining independent-living suites, the only setup like that in a building of 186 units!”

I was thrilled!

Exactly four months after our first EFT session, Anjali and her husband moved into their new home — seventh floor, mountain view, delicious food, friendly people, and an easier, happier life.

When I congratulated her on Facebook, she replied:

“Here’s the door that you predicted — or maybe manifested — between the two suites!
Thank you for your help with the EFT sessions. They were such a support for this BIG change. ❤️”

Do you struggle to say no at work, give away your time for free, or feel guilty the moment someone pushes back? You are not alone, and it is not your fault. Learning to set healthy boundaries at work is one of the most powerful things you can do for your career and your well being, and for many women, it is also one of the hardest.

Why Setting Healthy Boundaries at Work Feels So Hard

Penelope, a lovely, educated, intelligent, successful, highly capable woman came to me after a series of career setbacks. Despite her many achievements, she was stuck in one persistent pattern: she could not say no.

In our early sessions, we explored where this came from. Penelope’s mother had actively discouraged her daughter from expressing any needs or wants. The message was clear: consider what other people think, stay quiet, and never ask for anything.

One memory stood out. When four-year-old Penelope asked for a strawberry from a bowl her mother had set out for guests, her mother reacted furiously. She shamed Penelope for asking, telling her that even if something was offered, a child should say no. The lesson became a limiting belief: that asking for anything is selfish, and saying no to others is equally unacceptable.

The Hidden Cost of Not Setting Boundaries at Work

No wonder Penelope struggled in her career. She had been trained from infancy that her own needs were irrelevant, and that a different set of rules applied to her than to everyone else.

By the time she came to see me, Penelope had fallen into a financially and emotionally draining pattern: giving away hours of professional advice without asking for compensation, then quietly resenting the people who took it. She knew why she did it. She was afraid of being judged, afraid of being labelled difficult, and afraid of losing opportunities if she appeared anything less than endlessly available.

She was also holding back from accepting a new role she genuinely loved, one that was aligned with her values, and full of potential, because it paid less than her previous positions. What would people think?

How Childhood Messages Sabotage Your Career Boundaries

We worked together on a memory that had stayed with her for years: a job offer she had wanted to decline but, under pressure from influential people, ended up accepting. This cycle of reluctant yeses had repeated itself throughout her career, always leaving her feeling like a victim of other people’s agendas.

Using EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques, a process that works through emotional blocks by focusing on specific memories and feelings), we addressed the fear, resentment, and disappointment underneath that pattern. We worked through her anger at having been undervalued and underpaid. Gradually, something shifted.

While I am far from being a scientist, and I have a fairly skeptical mindset, I am fascinated by results, logic, metaphysics and quantum theories about time, space and the potential for time travel.

When I first found and experienced EFT Tapping I was in such bad emotional shape that I was willing to try almost anything. After reading about EFT online, I found a wonderful woman who had been trained in EFT by the founder, Gary Craig.

Although I had tried many techniques and therapies in the past, I was intrigued from my first session on at how fast, profound and transformative the results with EFT were for me, and as I began to share it with friends, how well it worked for others as well.

Matrix Reimprinting is even MORE astounding!

While EFT can be life altering and quickly so, Matrix Reimprinting, which uses many of the same techniques as does EFT is even more astounding. Matrix Reimprinting is one of the most powerful techniques in my tool box. If you are familiar with EFT, you know that tapping on our present day emotions about an event from the past, can have a profound effect on how we feel, what we think and what we believe – about ourselves, our world and our relationships.

During a Matrix Reimprinting session, we support a version of ourselves, from an earlier time in life, from times that were particularly difficult, from times that were often the origins of our triggers – those times when we react, or over react with anger, or fear, or grief, …in the present day to current situations. By offering our younger selves the support that we needed, and did not get, we can change how we feel about ourselves in the present and how worthy we are of helpful support.

All too often we received the message that because we were not treated with kindness and understanding that we did not and do not deserve compassionate treatment. However, when we do offer our younger selves, healthy support during difficult moments, we train our brains and our bodies to start believing that positive support is possible in our current lives and that there are people who are capable of providing it. We also can learn how to be more supportive to ourselves and others in the process.

Going back in time to support her younger self

While working with someone, after tapping on her current feelings about something that happened in her past, we ‘went back in time’ to support her younger self during an emotionally difficult event in her life. As is usually the case, after we tapped together, my client reported that her childhood self, ended up feeling much more supported and optimistic than had been the case when she first introduced herself to her younger self and asked if she would like some support and introduced her to tapping. After we had finished the work with her younger self she reported that the younger self was feeling substantially better and was now able to make some positive changes in her life.

This is a fairly typical response to a Matrix Reimprinting Session. What is not so usual is that this time an interesting look that I interpreted as wonder came over her face. When I asked her what was going on for her, she replied that she had often felt as a child, that she had a Fairy Godmother or an invisible friend!

Her childhood invisible friend was her!

At that moment she was coming to realize that the invisible friend she felt during childhood, may well be her present day self, who had come back in time to help her out, in that situation and in others!

It is a profound and empowering moment when we realize that we are not nearly as powerless as we had assumed and that support can come from all sorts of unexpected places, including from ourselves, both in the present, and from the future!

If you have yet to experience Matrix Reimprinting for yourself, or would like more, consider reaching out to make a date with me. I love nothing as much as sharing this wonderful tool for transformation. her

It is easy to get overwhelmed when your parent develops dementia. It is harder to deal with when your relationship with your mother and/or your father was rarely easy BEFORE they began to be effected by memory loss associated with aging.

Critical, demanding, emotionally shut down, or volatile parents are difficult enough when in their somewhat right mind. Add an increasing amount of forgetfulness and dependence and the situation can start to spiral out of control. Trying to protect one’s elderly parent from their own worst inclinations can be decidedly stressful.

Dealing with a parent with dementia can be exhausting

A lovely, kind and very empathetic woman returned to my practice for a few sessions. Her father was not only constantly repeating himself and asking the same questions, over and over and over…he was also being evicted, AGAIN. ‘Kelsie’ had helped her father move 10 times in the last 4 years! It is so easy to get overwhelmed when your parent develops dementia.

She described feeling stressed, exhausted, and constantly anxious after returning from a 5-day trip, with her father, to a derelict property owned by her father.

The realtor they had contacted was not returning her phone calls and one of the people she had approached, to remove the 40 years of junk accumulated on Dad’s property, had yelled at her. This was causing her a lot of consternation as she feared that she had taken on Dad’s vibration and that this was attracting people’s anger towards her.

So, we tapped together.

Tapping on the stress and guilt

We tapped on the anxiety, the panic, the stress and the guilt she was feeling, at not wanting to have to deal with Dad and his outbursts any more. We tapped on her feeling like she was barely keeping it together. I reminded her of ALL that she had done for Dad up to this point, and that the anger that she felt was directed at her, might actually have had little or nothing to do with anything she had said or done.

We compiled a list of all that she had accomplished for Dad, (including – despite his objections – arranging for an appointment at a local assisted living facility for later that day. Dad was not at all keen on the idea but had agreed to go to see it as he knew he had to move somewhere. The manager of the apartment building he was living in keen to see him gone. It is not only his daughter who finds him difficult!)

As we tapped and talked, Kelsie began to feel more empowered and calmer. We discussed how hard it is to be an empath. She had been feeling enmeshed in her Dad’s life and his angry energy. I reminded her that she was NOT turning into her father as she had feared.

You need to take care of yourself

She began to question her role with Dad as I encouraged her to take steps to care more for herself – to tap, to do the breathing – nervous system regulating – exercises I had taught her more frequently. To get several massages, (paid for by Dad!), and to arrange for physical assistance to help move Dad one last time.

Actually available help vs unresponsive contractors

I suggested that there were likely other realtors available to deal with Dad’s property, and other dump truck operators available to haul away Dad’s junk. She was not stuck with the ones who were not returning her calls, or who yelled at her. I also reminded her that if Dad was not willing to move to the facility that would provide him with meals, laundry, cleaning and supervision, that there were options to help get him accessed and placed elsewhere, (with or without his active agreement). I jogged her memory of all the support she had already set up for herself, with me, and with another person who specializes in helping caregivers navigate the ‘system’…

I suggested that she was on the home stretch, that many of the to do list items we had discussed in previous sessions, had been accomplished. She had arranged to get a Power of Attorney, she was now legally responsible for making medical decisions for her Dad. She was on his bank account and had easily put an alert on his spending, so should he decide to make a big, possibly irrational, purchase she would be informed. Dad had an appointment with a local notary to update his will…

And we tapped …

Kelsie visibly relaxed as we continued to tap and she connected with her own kind, compassionate, yet empowered energy. She acknowledged that it was time to stop beating herself up for the anger and actions of her father and others and decided that her role with Dad was to be a ‘kind witness’, not codependent!

At the end of the session, I requested that she let me know how the appointment at the care home went.

Later that day, I received the following email:

Phew! Despite texting me before our tour saying he was CERTAIN (the care home), would not be the right place for him based on what he saw on their website, he ended up liking it and asked me to secure one of the suites we toured.

He can start moving in (soon).

I can’t tell you how relieved I am.

Thank you again for this morning.

Big hugs.

Recovering co-dependents/people pleasers

I have spent FAR too much of my own life interacting with angry, resentful, blaming, irresponsible, addicted, frustrating people. As a recovering co-dependent, I get how difficult it can be.

If you would like assistance to deal with those difficult friends or relatives in your life, perhaps I can help? Together we can identify and release what gets in your way of putting yourself and your emotional and physical health first.

Please consider reaching out to arrange for an introductory EFT Tapping session. You don’t have to deal with all of this by yourself. I can relate to the frustrations of having relatives with mental health issues and have learned some helpful techniques I love to share that helped me as well as my clients.

Or find out more about EFT Tapping here.

A Boundary Setting EFT Course is coming soon that will give you some strategies to deal with difficult people. Disc issues, parasites, pancreatitis, a thyroid issue, high bacteria counts, and a lump were all diagnosed. It just seemed to get worse and worse. She lost her appetite, her energy, 5.5 kilos and seemingly her will to live. We fed her, (gently with a syringe), we encouraged her, we went back and forth to the vet and we tapped.

We tapped on her symptoms, we tapped on what we thought she might have been feeling and we tapped on our own grief and concern. Several times she rallied only to again make us wonder if it was time to do the ultimate kindness. We didn’t know what else to do except keep on keeping on, attempting to entice her with homemade soups and tasty treats – while continuing to tap.

While she never regained her puppyhood, and at age 13 her days were numbered, I am happy to report that she began eating voluntarily, gained some weight and strength back AND eagerly went swimming daily at the pool of our Golden loving neighbours. Her eyes lost their vacant look, she engaged with us, rolling in the grass, chasing her ball and wagging her tail again. She lived to be 14.5, which is a very healthy age for a dog that started off her life with severe intestinal issues. When it was finally her time to go, she stopped eating and lay down in her favourite spot, where we spent her last day telling her how much we loved her until our vet/friend arrived to send her peacefully on her way.

She did and I asked if she would accept an antihistamine, (non-drowsy), for her boy dog. She agreed and we started to tap on her anger towards the vet, herself and her boy dog whose rough horseplay may have originated the problems of her now diseased dog.

ALMOST IMMEDIATELY (far faster than one would expect a dog to react to a drug), the dog lay down and relaxed. We continued to tap on grief and forgiveness for herself and for her dog.

I talked about my personal experiences with my dogs who were equally sensitive to their human’s emotional state. I have come to understand that they had taken on my then unprocessed emotions that I suspect contributed to their premature deaths.

At the end of the session she was feeling considerably less angry and sad and the dog was lying quietly by her side.

The next morning she sent me a message to let me know that her dog had ‘slept all night, still calm –amazing! For the first time in ages! No more pills.’

Biological Anthropologists are calling on modern medicine to reconsider the labeling and treatment of ‘mental disorders’. These include ADD, ADHD, Anxiety, Addiction, Depression, Dyslexia, OCD…

Labels like ‘mental disorders’ matter. They are used to define us and limit us.

Evidence now suggests that rather than being solely chemical imbalances in the brain, or a DNA issue, at least some of these incidences of ‘mental disorders’ could be present day triggered responses to traumatic childhood memories.

Despite the widespread and increasing use of antidepressants, and other ‘mood altering drugs’, the rates of anxiety, addiction, depression stress and overwhelm are NOT decreasing. While drugs can treat the symptoms, they often perform no better than placebos – or worse.

Pharmaceuticals can result in suicidal thoughts, insomnia, weight gain, headaches, brain fog…

Researcher Kristen Syme, compares treating these ‘mental disorders’ with medications, to trying to use drugs to heal a broken bone, without setting the bone itself.

Feeling safe is essential

Children living in violent/abusive/addicted/neglectful families rarely get a chance to feel safe. Their nervous systems never fully relax. Memories of their childhood traumas can cause constant anticipation of more difficult things to deal with; even after the immediate dangers have passed.

Continued emotional and/or physical threats in childhood can have a profound and prolonged effect on our emotional make-up. We learned to protect ourselves in several ways; fight, flight, freeze or fawn/fix. Children AND adults living in high stress situations then react by running away, screaming and fighting back, numbing out or by trying to fix other people’s problems. Because of these behaviours they are often seen as flawed rather than damaged.

Emotional damage CAN be repaired, while ‘mental disorders’ have been seen as a design problem, existing from birth. Moving our focus from a faulty design model to a repair model changes the focus towards positive change.

If we can identify the emotional origins of ‘mental disorders’, (frequently during traumatic childhood events), we can, with EFT Tapping and Matrix Reimprinting create a course forward.

People need to move

Our bodies are designed to move. Yet many of us spend far too much time sitting at desks for our emotional, intellectual and physical health. It is hard to sit still and pay attention when you feel like you are jumping out of your skin and need to run and jump.

The consequences for not being allowed to move, when you need to move can be profoundly life altering.

In places where physical activity is a substantial part of the school day, rates of learning difficulties are lower. In countries where kids are required to sit still for most of the day, the rates are much higher. Childhood physical and emotional needs and experiences are not often considered when designing the school curriculum, although there is a movement towards the creation of ‘trauma informed’ educational systems.

Adversity can be overcome

Dr. Gabor Mate wrote the following in his book, Scattered Minds: The Origins and Healing of Attention Deficit Disorder:

“Throughout the human lifespan, there remains a constant two-way interaction between psychological states and the neurochemistry of the frontal lobes, a fact that many doctors do not pay enough attention to. One result is the overreliance on medications in the treatment of mental disorders. Modern psychiatry is doing too much listening to Prozac and not enough listening to human beings; people’s life histories should be given at least as much importance as the chemistry of their brains. The dominant tendency is to explain mental conditions by deficiencies of the brain’s chemical messengers, the neurotransmitters.”

EFT Tapping is a highly effective method to calm our nervous systems. We can, with Matrix Reimprinting, learn to positively reframe the meanings we have given to those past stressful circumstances that keep us on ‘high alert’. We no longer need to get triggered, particularly when faced with no immediate danger.

Establishing healthy boundaries, AND STICKING TO THEM, is an essential part in preventing future adversity, while dealing with situations that currently exist by significantly reducing the symptoms of anxiety, depression and many learning difficulties. Most of us were not taught how to set and stick to healthy boundaries but the good news is that we can learn. Let me show you how.

Learning new ways to deal with conflict by using Non-Violent Communication skills, can also help to reduce anxiety, depression and learning difficulties.

Discovering EFFECTIVE ways for the challenged brain to learn can bring remarkable results. As children, we had little choice or power to do things differently. Our childhood traumas have defined us.

As adults, we CAN choose to learn how to release the emotional and physical stress imprinted during traumatic childhood events. We CAN reframe those limiting beliefs which cause our physical and psychological issues.

We CAN learn healthy ways to negotiate demanding situations, usually with remarkable, long-lasting results, (and healthier relationships). We CAN live lives that are much more satisfactory, and even fun!

It would be my privilege to support you in releasing your old and limiting stories, stresses, fears, anger, resentments and grief…

I love helping people to discover new and positive ways to live life.

Check out the Tapping Detective testimonials for ‘evidence’ that positive change is possible!

If you would like to experience similar results, please email alice@tappingdetective.com to make an introductory appointment.

References:

https://news.wsu.edu/2020/05/26/researchers-call-new-approach-mental-disorders/

Cathy’s Claustrophobia – A Familial Issue

I have been working with a woman who had suffered from claustrophobia for most of her life.

Both Her Parents Were Claustrophobic

After working on some of her own memories of feeling trapped, (and significantly reducing the intensity of her feelings about those memories), I asked some questions to help find any other possible origins to her fears.

She told me that BOTH of her parents were claustrophobic. While we did a little digging of what she knows about her parents she told me that her mother told her once that her mother’s own claustrophobia started when she went to boarding school, after her father’s death. I told my client that my own mother had also been sent to boarding school, in her case after her parent’s divorce and that I had done some work in the Matrix, (using an EFT Technique called Matrix Reimprinting), for my mother during that difficult, (and I believe very impactful time), in my own mother’s life.

Surrogate Work

With my client, Cathy’s, permission, we decided to do some surrogate work on her mother during those early days at the boarding school.

As soon as we started, Cathy had a very vivid image of the boarding school, with tall stained-glass windows, marble, wood and tiles. When we checked in with her young mother, she described feeling sad and lost, (and wearing black patent leather shoes with white frilly socks!) After tapping in the Matrix, the sadness lifted as Cathy, (who had introduced herself as a friend of her mother’s father) and her mother went outside to run around and get ‘fresh air on her face’.

(Cathy’s claustrophobia is also associated with being hot as well as confined).

After Cathy remarked that her mother had said, (in the Matrix), that she didn’t know anyone at the school, she remembered that her mother made a great friend at that school. So, we brought into the picture, that great friend.

What happened in the Matrix

The two girls showed each other their ‘teddies’ and put them on their side-by-side beds, under an open window. Cathy reported that the best friends were excited about sleeping next to each other.

After reimprinting the new ‘story’, Cathy said she was going to talk to her mother later that day and would ask her mother about her boarding school experiences and how she had been feeling there.

A Phone Call With Her Mother

The next day I received this email:

‘I just spoke to my mum on the phone. I asked her when did her dad die, if she got to say goodbye and when she went to boarding school. She said he died suddenly from a heart attack, she didn’t get to say goodbye and 2 days later she was sent to boarding school.

She then said to me that nobody has ever asked her about that and that nobody really knows. She said she wanted to run away from boarding school (I believe I used those exact words yesterday in our session).

She then said that something phenomenal happened today – she was walking with her couple of friends and they started talking about boarding school. One of her friends said she told her parents back then that she didn’t want to go. My mum said “and was that acceptable?” And her friend said it was. My mum proceeded on and said she was forced to go and none of them would have dreamed to speak up to their parents about how they actually felt about it.

I said to my mum that it didn’t surprise me at all that that conversation came up today because I was tapping on it yesterday.

Wow, Alice. Wow…. She wants me to tell her about it one on one when I’m home which I knew already in my heart.

Thank you’!

Matrix Reimprinting is a Phenomenal Tool

It still amazes and surprises me every time I get this sort of feedback. Matrix Reimprinting is indeed a phenomenal tool. The synchronicities keep on showing up!

I look forward to hearing in future sessions how this work impacts Cathy’s own life and claustrophobia. It has already had a pronounced difference.

What our parents experienced can often have profound effects on our own lives, whether or not we have actual knowledge of their experiences.

I now understand how and why my mother’s childhood radically effected her ability to parent. (She was also sent to a boarding school, in her case after her parent’s divorce.) EFT Tapping has helped me to come to that more compassionate knowing, of why she acted the ways that she did; as a result forgiveness has replaced the blame, anger and resentment that I felt previously.

Perhaps The Buddhists Are Right?

As we heal ourselves, we heal those who came before us, and those who are to come after us.
